My parents raised me in homes filled with books. As a child, the two houses I spent most of my time in each had rooms with built in bookshelves. The only thing I am more passionate about than my career and reading is the art of writing.
My career as a professional Registered Nurse spans forty years. I earned a Masters degree in Nursing which enabled me to teach at the university level. Although I found teaching challenging and rewarding, I learned direct patient care best defined who I was as a professional. Investigating medical malpractice at a law office developed my research skills, but again, Critical Care, the urgency, the intimacy, the autonomy, called me back to the bedside.
Secure in my profession and with my child grown, I pursued writing. Years ago I had taken Creative Writing at the UTD. I started taking non-degree seeking classes at The Writer’s Garret. The instructors encouraged me to continue my writing. I entered the SMU Creative Writing program and worked under the tutelage of Ms. Bridget Foley. I finished my first novel, an 80,000 word work of fiction in 2011. I submitted it to and was chosen to go to the SMU New York Writer’s Seminar. Boomerbuzzmagazine.com lists me as a contributing writer.
My current project involves my work with dying patients. It illuminates the emotional and spiritual journey taken by a professional who cared for and knew intimately many patients who died under her care. It describes the inspiration that can occur in the face of recurring loss.
